I took this photo in Congaree National Park in South Carolina. The park hosts a firefly viewing event each year, similar to the one in the Great Smoky Mountains. These fireflies in Congaree, Photuris frontalis, also synchronize but are a different species than the synchronous ones in the Smokies (Photinus carolinus), and they have a different flashing pattern. While the overall group display of male P. frontalis flashing in synchrony can appear continuous, individual males are actually intermittently synchronous: they flash in synchrony for several cycles and then pause for several cycles before rejoining. It is spectacular to see, especially in larger numbers, when the perception of synchronicity becomes much better. These fireflies also live in other southern states. I took this shot by layering multiple photos on top of each other to represent a duration of more than ten minutes. Congaree National Park, South Carolina.
